Every beginner makes mistakes when learning a new language. It is normal, expected and actually part of the learning process. But Spanish has a unique set of beginner mistakes that Indian learners repeat again and again without realizing it. Some are grammar issues, some are pronunciation problems and some come from thinking in English or Hindi while speaking Spanish.
This blog breaks down the most common mistakes and explains how to fix them!
But let me tell you, these mistakes are not meant to embarrass anyone. They exist so students can recognise patterns and correct them early. The earlier you catch them, the faster your fluency improves.
Thinking in English While Speaking Spanish
Example mistake: I like this food very much.
The biggest problem Indian learners face is translating directly from English. English sentence order and Spanish sentence order are not always the same.
Spanish learners try to say: Yo gusto esta comida muy.
Correct Spanish: Me gusta mucho esta comida.
Learn common ready made sentence patterns instead of translating word by word. Spanish uses different structures for expressions like “I like.”
Using Masculine and Feminine Incorrectly
Every Spanish noun has a gender. This is confusing for Indian students because English does not have this system.
Example mistake
El casa.
Correct
La casa because casa is feminine.
Example mistake
La problema.
Correct
El problema because some words ending in a are masculine.
Fix
Learn vocabulary with the article. Instead of memorising casa, memorise la casa.
Forgetting Verb Conjugations
Beginners often speak with the verb in its base form.
Example mistake
Yo comer pizza.
I eat pizza.
Correct
Yo como pizza.
Fix
Start with the most common verbs first. Tener, ser, estar, hacer and querer. Practise just these for one week and your confidence grows quickly.
Using ‘Yo’ too often
Beginners say Yo in every sentence because English requires I.
Example mistake
Yo voy al mercado. Yo compro frutas. Yo regreso a casa.
Correct
Voy al mercado. Compro frutas. Regreso a casa.
Fix
Spanish verbs already contain the subject inside the conjugation. You do not need to repeat.
Thinking Plural Forms Work Like English
Example mistake
Dos persona.
Correct
Dos personas.
Example mistake
Mucho problemas.
Correct
Muchos problemas.
Fix
Learn plural endings for nouns and adjectives together.
